A house that keeps its best self for after dark.

The pool is L-shaped and the baby blue of shallow water. Not a feature. An invitation. Long enough to swim seriously in, still enough to drift. It runs along the edge of the property and ends where the rice field begins — a boundary that exists, but only just. This is the private view from one of the most considered houses in Pererenan. No one can see in.

This is Pererenan. The quieter version of Canggu, which is the only version worth staying in. House SJ was designed by Caceres Tous Studio and wrapped in black ulin wood — a facade that reads as shadow, as restraint, as something that has decided not to explain itself. Two closed living volumes connected by a steel bridge. Italian marble and teak.. Vanishing walls of glass. Outside, the rice field. The house does not announce the transition between the two — it removes it.

But wait until dark.

The lighting here is not a system — it is a position. Every source considered. Every angle deliberate. The house at night becomes something more intimate than the house by day: the pool shifting colour, the firepit lit, the kitchen open to the outside air, the steel bridge dissolving into the dark. What remains is warmth, water, and the complete silence of a rice field that has seen a great many beautiful evenings and remembers none of them.

Three of the six bedrooms share a long balcony — a private terrace that runs the length of the building, bench-seated from wall to wall. The best conversations at House SJ happen here, after midnight, without a plan to have them. Below, the playroom holds a pool table, a bar, and a sofa. Above, the rooftop waits for someone to give it a night worth remembering.

This is a house for being your most alive self in.
